The Independence Day reminds us of those patriots who fought and suffered to win our freedom. Independence is the freedom of the soul, a perception of the mind and a feeling understood by the heart. This freedom, perception and more importantly, this feeling is that of liberation, patriotism, self-dependence and other such things. That nation is Somaliland. Freedom or independence means that our lives are shaped by personal priorities rather than external constraints or social pressures. It was 18 of May 1991 when Somaliland became independent again. Independence Day is celebrated all over Somaliland as the day brought joy for Somaliland people both at home and overseas. 18 of May is the most important day in the history of Somaliland people as the date this fortunate day to Somaliland people.

We celebrate this day with great zeal every year.This day always remind me of the untold sacrifices of the fighters of freedom. We should forget those patriots who shed their blood for achieving Freedom.The great sacrifice for our freedom fighters are remembered, which serves as a beacon light for the development of this great country. The whole nation pays homage to freedom fighters s who have laid down their lives for the honour of this country. There is great enthusiasm for all Somaliland people on 18 of May every year as the date brought into end the dictatorship rule that lasted 22 years.

Our people were put to jail without committing any offence, detained without cause. Their belongs were looted. Their livestock was taken by force. Innocent civilians were forced to pay ransom for their lovely ones detained by regime. The agony of the people cannot be described in words. Independence Day is our national holiday. Shops, offices, colleges, schools and business establishments are closed on 18 of May National flag is hoisted everywhere.

National song is sung.The day reminds us of the patriots and martyrs who laid down their lives for the country. Martyrs are considered holy or are respected by their followers, becoming symbols of exceptional leadership and heroism in the face of difficult circumstances.The martyrs’ moral authority becomes a means of confronting an enemy’s superior political and military power. SNM Martyrs played significant roles in liberation movement. In conclusion, SNM has liberation struggle has reshaped Somaliland history.
